Where is The Birmingham Theatre School?

The Birmingham Theatre Scholl is at The Old Fire Station, 285 - 287 Moseley Road, Highgate, Birmingham, B12 0DX.

 

In brief

The Birmingham Theatre School was founded by Sir Barry Jackson in the theatre he built (now The Old REP). The school has been based at The Old Fire Station in Highgate since at least 1990 (or earlier).

 

The Birmingham Theatre School - history

Sir Barry Jackson of the Birmingham Repertory Company founded The Birmingham Theatre School at his theatre on Station Street.

He appointed Mary Richards to be the first principal of the school in 1942, she had previously worked as actress for Sir Barry Jackson.

Chris Rozanski was appointed Principal in 1990. The school has trained thousands of part time students over a wide variety of production bases courses. He has continued the legacy of the original founders.

The school is housed within The Old Fire Station.

It is easy to access from the City Centre, Moseley and Kings Heath, such as on the no 50 bus route.

 

The Old Fire Station

The Old Fire Station is one of the finest buildings in Balsall Heath / Highgate.

During the Second World War, the station worked overtime along with other fire stations to cope with fires caused by incendiary bombs.

The building is no longer a fire station and is now a drama school.

It does retain many of the fire station features.

West Midlands Fire Service didn't move very far to their current base of operations.

They are now located at Highgate Community Fire Station (since at least the 1980s).

They have two fire engines, and one hydraulic platform.
